 DMU

26th April 1966

Included for its historical interest rather than quality, this view shows a Midland Pullman set (cars 60092 and 60732 are visible) on a rare visit to Botanic Gardens depot in Hull on 26.4.66. The two Midland Pullman sets had been made redundant from their work of the previous six years on the MML between St Pancras and Manchester Central by the introduction the previous week of the full electric service on the WCML between Euston and M'c'r Piccadilly. They were being trialled as possible replacements for loco-hauled Pullmans on the ECML between Kings Cross and both Hull and Leeds. Nothing came of the trials and, as is known, the two sets went to join their brethren on the Western Region. Leonard Rogers.

March 1971

March 1971. Half a century ago I persuaded my dad to lend me his Practika camera and I took my first two railway photographs. I don't know the exact date, but I recall it was just before my twelfth birthday. I'd been a "spotter" for a few years and although I had an Instamatic camera, for some reason I hadn't pointed it at trains, apart from an attempt at capturing Flying Scotsman in 1968, an abject failure due to forgetting to wind on the film. On this visit to Botanic Gardens shed in Hull, I decided to give it a go. There are two pairs of green EE Type 2s (Class 20 in new money) along with a mixture of DMUs (Met-Camms and a Trans-Pennine DMC in blue/grey), all of which was regular fare for BG. The locos are stabled on what were once the running lines to Hull docks and the seaside resorts of Hornsea and Withernsea. These lines closed completely in 1965. Syd Young.

From my first-ever roll of railway photographs when I was aged thirteen. A Trans-Pennine unit, complete with Buffet car, runs into Botanic Gardens Depot in 1972. On the far left EE Type 4 399 and Brush Type 4 1996, both in green are stabled. On the far right EE Type 2 8316 is also trundling into the sidings. The photograph was taken on a Kodak Instamatic 25 camera and is scanned from a Kodak 126 negative. Syd Young.
